(Saunders, 1839)

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Arthropoda

Class: Insecta

Order: Coleoptera

Family: Scarabaeidae

Subfamily: Cetoniinae

Very beautiful species of flower beetle of metallic green color with sometimes some copper reflections. It also has two white spots on each elytron which vary in size and shape.

This beetle measures up to 5.5cm for males and 4cm for females.

This species is native to Thailand.

Difficulty of breeding
Easy

Special features:

Easy to breed but quite long cycle

Active during the day

Some points to note

  • Does not tolerate high heat
  • Seems to appreciate a moist substrate but with a well-aerated container.

What you might need:

01. His breeding

For the dreams : Plastic boxes with ventilation. Provide a quantity of substrate adapted to the number of larvae, approximately 2L per larva.

For the hulls : It is possible to leave the shell in the breeding box of the larval stage. Otherwise it can be transferred to another box. In all cases, the container must be properly ventilated.

For adults: Provide a terrarium adapted to the number of individuals. For 1 couple, provide for example a terrarium of 40x30x40 (LxWxH) with ventilation on the lid. It is important to provide at least 20cm of substrate for laying eggs. ( If the substrate is not high enough, the females will lay few or no eggs). Also provide small branches for movement.

The ground should not be completely flat because the beetles that fall on their backs die quickly because they can no longer turn around. It is therefore very important to fill it with bark, stones or other materials and not to flatten the substrate.

Temperature: for optimal conditions 18/23°C because this species does not tolerate high heat.

Humidity:

For larvae: provide a slightly damp substrate.

During pupation: provide a slightly drier substrate.

For adults: Provide a slightly damp substrate. If the terrarium is well ventilated, provide a small spray of water every 2 to 3 days.

Lighting: Classic lighting required for adults (bulb, spotlight, tube, etc.)

For larvae: Classic flower beetle substrate: decomposed and crushed oak, beech or possibly chestnut leaves. The larvae are saproxylophagous and feed on decomposing materials (wood, leaves). It is possible to add protein supplements to obtain larger adults, even if with a classic substrate you can already obtain good results.

For adults: Fruits (mainly banana) or beetle jelly. Possible supplement with pollen.

Incubation

2 to 3 weeks

Development

From 10 to 12 months

Nymphosis

1 1/2 to 2 months

Imago lifespan

2 to 4 months

02. Please note

Sexing: The male does not have a horn like most species of this size. Sexing can be done by observing under the abdomen, the male has a furrow unlike the female. It also has visibly more elongated frontal tarsi and a more curved pronotum.

Prolificacy: Average if conditions are optimal. A female can lay about fifty eggs.

Cannibalism: No, provided that there is sufficient food. But it can happen that L3 larvae attack the shells of congeners that have already pupated.

Development: The larvae will become yellowish before pupation.
