Centrobolus richardii
(Lawrence, 1967)
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Diplopoda
Order: Spirobolida
Family: Pachybolidae
Genus: Centrobolus
Centrobolus richardii is native to South Africa. This species has a segmented body with bright red to orange hues, often contrasted by black or brown bands. It measures about 6 to 8 cm. The young are white and measure a few millimeters then the colors appear as they grow.
This species often stays on the surface and loves to climb. It is easily observed during the day. It is easy to handle unlike other species.
This species is very similar to Centrobolus splendidus but the colors seem less bright, they are more robust and thick. The differentiation between these two species is mainly done by studying the gonopods.
Special features:
Easy to breed
- A gregarious species, it often lives in groups.
- The presence of branches in the terrarium is strongly recommended, this species loves to climb.
- Presence of dead wood (especially branches) strongly recommended, this species tends to dig into dead wood.
Defense technique
The coloration of this species is a classic example of aposematism , a defense mechanism that warns predators of its potential toxicity.
What you might need:
Calcium carbonate 150g
flower beetle /iule/isopod substrate
Braplast 5.8 L Transparent Box

01. Breeding
It is possible to keep a group of 10 Centrobolus richardii in a terrarium of 30x30x40 (LxWxH) minimum. This terrarium can be made of glass or plastic. It must be slightly ventilated. You can also use plastic boxes by making a few ventilation holes. The aim is to maintain a humid but slightly ventilated atmosphere.
At least 10cm of substrate will be placed at the bottom of the terrarium. The substrate is essential because it serves as both a habitat and food for the animals.
The terrarium can be decorated with bark, moss, leaves (oak, beech or chestnut). The addition of branches is strongly recommended.
Temperature: Breeding possible between 20°C and 26°C.
Humidity: 70 - 90% The substrate must remain moist. It is possible to leave a slightly drier corner.
Lighting: Sufficient ambient light.
Generalist detritivores: The basic food is the substrate . This is mainly composed of leaves and wood of oak, beech or possibly chestnut decomposed and crushed. We strongly recommend placing pieces of dead wood in the terrarium , the Centrobolus richardii will dig into the wood to feed and hide.
You can add fruits and vegetables, fish food/protein supplement and/or lichen.
Calcium intake is recommended, we will therefore add cuttlefish bone, powdered limestone or reptile calcium as a supplement.
Young iules seem to feed on the droppings of older animals. At birth we therefore advise keeping the young with the adults.

- Fruits and vegetables must not contain pesticides. It is advisable to rinse them with clean water before use.
- Be careful of mold, you must renew the food as soon as necessary.
Development
about 1 year
ADULT LIFESPAN
about 1 year
02. Please note
Sexing: The differentiation between males and females of the species Centrobolus richardii is mainly done by the observation of their gonopods, sexual organs. In the male, towards the seventh segment of the body, the pair of legs is absent. Males are often a little smaller than females.
Prolificacy, mating and laying: Medium prolificacy. Eggs are laid singly in shells made of excrement and substrate.
