Myronides glaucus "Peleng"

(PSG 343)

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Arthropoda

Class: Insecta

Order: Phasmatodea

Family: Phasmatidae

Subfamily: Lonchodinae

Very beautiful species of stick insect native to Peleng Island which is an island in Indonesia, located off the east coast of Sulawesi. It is a species with long antennae and long, thin legs.

Sexual dimorphism is quite marked for Myronides glaucus "Peleng"  . Indeed , The females measure approximately 10 cm (with the front legs approximately 18 cm ). They have a green body ranging from bottle green to turquoise blue, the head and base of the legs are yellow or light green.

Males measure about 8cm (14cm with the front legs). They are the same color as the females during the early stages and are systematically orange-brown in color as adults.

They are identifiable from the L3 stage thanks to a protuberance (which will become the poculum) at the end of their abdomen. The young are born "fluorescent" green, they then measure about 2 cm. They have white antennae at the end.

The eggs are oval/elongated in shape and measure about 2mm. They are light brown or grey-brown in colour with bluish reflections and a slightly granular surface.

Very easy to breed - species suitable for beginners

Be careful not to hurt them when handling them. They have long legs and fragile antennae!

What you need:

01. His breeding

L1 has just been born and measures a few centimeters

For the eggs:

Provide an incubation box. We recommend our micro-perforated boxes with lids. Then several possibilities:

  • Place some paper towel at the bottom of the box, moisten it and place the eggs on top. Be careful of the risk of mold.
  • You place a slice of floral foam at the bottom of the box, moisten it and place the eggs on top.
  • You place vermiculite at the bottom of the box which you moisten and place the eggs on top.

For young people:

Either you raise them with the adults (be careful when changing food, the young are small and thin) or you raise them separately. You will therefore have to use the same model of terrarium as the adults but of a smaller size.

The floor of the terrarium will be covered with damp paper towels in order to maintain good humidity and facilitate maintenance of the terrarium.

For adults:

The size of the terrarium will depend on the number of specimens. For example, for 1 or 2 couples, plan for a terrarium of at least 30cm x 30cm x 40cm. It is important to have sufficient height for moulting.

In addition, the terrarium must be partially ventilated . For example, with only one side made of mesh and the others made of glass. This will help maintain sufficient humidity.

The floor of the terrarium will be covered with damp paper towels to maintain good humidity, facilitate maintenance of the terrarium and the harvesting of eggs.

Mainly bramble. But it is also possible to use rosebush, fern or even raspberry bush.

To do this, you need to arrange the branches in the terrarium by placing the stems in a jar of water (to avoid drowning, be sure to block the entrance to the jar with paper towels, for example).

It is best to give young stick insects bramble with tender leaves (light green).

Renew as soon as the food begins to fade.

Temperature: between 20°C and 28°C.

Humidity:

For the eggs: The incubation medium and the atmosphere must remain humid. To do this, spray a little water whenever necessary. Be careful if it is too dry, either there will be no birth, or the young may not be able to come out of the egg completely or will be poorly formed.

For young people: Humid atmosphere required, approximately 70/90% humidity. Be careful if it is too dry, the moults will be missed. Humidity can be provided by the food plant through the foliage. Otherwise, spray a little water as soon as necessary.

For adults: Humid atmosphere required, about 70/80% humidity. They can tolerate slightly lower humidity. Humidity can be provided by the food plant through the foliage. Otherwise, spray a little water as needed.

Lighting: Lighting is optional if the ambient light is sufficient. Otherwise, additional lighting will be required.

02. Its development

The eggs

Laying Mode: Females drop eggs randomly on the ground. They begin laying 3-4 weeks after reaching the adult stage.

Egg collection: As soon as possible or each time the terrarium is cleaned and the bottom paper towel is changed.

Laying frequency: Approximately 10/15 eggs per week

Incubation period: 2 to 4 months.

The young people

Development time : 4 to 6 months - This depends on the breeding temperature. The higher it is, the faster the development will be.

Number of stages: 7 (L1 to L7)

Adults

Reproduction: Sexual - presence of males and females.

Defense: None

Prolificacy: Very high
