When Princisia vanwaerebecki feels threatened, this species emits a hissing sound.  by brutally expelling air through the stigmata in order to scare away its attacker. Hence its name Blowing Cockroach .

REPRODUCTION - Laying and development

Reproduction is easy. Females are ovoviviparous, producing an ootheca which they keep in an incubator pouch for about 2 to 3 months.

These oothecae contain 30 to 100 eggs. They then hatch inside the female and the nymphs are then expelled. The newly emerged nymphs are pure white until their exoskeleton hardens and darkens.

Nymphs go through a period of 6 to 7 moults over a period of 5 to 18 months. Development is largely influenced by temperature as well as nutritional quality.

TEMPERATURE HYGROMETRY

Temperature

Breeding possible between 25 and 28°C . Below that, reproduction will be less or even non-existent.

Hygrometry

60-80% . If the humidity is too low, moulting problems can occur. The ideal is to have a humid area and a dry area in the breeding box. Be careful of the risk of mould.

Terrarium

Beware of escapes!

Princisia vanwaerebecki climbs very well on smooth walls and both adults and young people. So pay attention to the size of the mesh of the vents and the sealing of the lid. We strongly advise you to apply a layer of silicone grease on the entire upper part of your box and to renew as soon as necessary.

Terrarium

You can use plastic boxes with ventilation, but also aquariums or terrariums. Ventilation is very important to prevent the appearance of mold and mites.

The size will depend on the number of individuals and will therefore have to be adapted to the growth of the colony. For example, in a 50 x 40 x 30 tank, approximately 20 specimens can be kept.

Substrate

The substrate will be composed of coconut fiber, bran, potting soil, peat or wood chips. It will be replaced regularly to prevent invasion by mites.

Decorations and additional elements

Princisia vanwaerebecki appreciates dark and quiet atmospheres. We can therefore add empty egg boxes to create hiding places and increase the volume. We can also use bark , cardboard tubes and empty paper towel rolls or toilet paper. We can add dead leaves, branches, stones...

Food

Food

Mainly fruits and vegetables but also beetles jelly, flakes for fish food, kibble, bread, .... It will be necessary to make sure to renew them as soon as necessary in order to avoid the appearance of mold. Hydration is done via food but you can also use water gel.

Supplements

The name Princisia vanwaerebeki is dedicated to Karlis Princis for the genus name (doctor at the University of Lund in Sweden) and to Daniel van Waerebeke (Helminthologist at the IRD center in Tananarive)
